As a general rule, there are three types of people. The first are the majority of people – the car lovers (or, for some of us, the slightly less enthusiastic car users). These people have a beating heart for the grumbling engine of a car. Whether it’s a 5-speed manual transition 1967 Mustang GT500 Fastback with a custom-built racing engine and custom leather bucket seats or a 2018 Prius to try to save the planet, car people are just that – car people.

The second type of person is a lover of Motorcycles. We say lover, because while there are countless car users who would never classify themselves as lovers, typically people don’t climb aboard a two wheeled rocket with nothing between them and the road but some cow hide unless they love it. From the ever-classic Indian to a burly Harley Davidson Road King with a Milwaukee-Eight V-Twin Engine and Cast Aluminium Impeller Wheels, Motorcycle lovers will ride in the pouring rain just to feel the freedom man and machine experience on the road.

The third type of person is the rarest kind – he (or she!) who loves both cars and Motorcycles. This type of person is the Black Footed Ferret (super rare animal) of the vehicular world. These superstars love anything with an engine and don’t discriminate between two wheels or four. Given the choice between a 1965 AC Cobra and a KTM 1290 Super Duke GT, they’ll break out into sweats, unable to choose.

So, what it is about these two-wheeled beasts that we love so much? Is it the freedom they offer? The power of the engine? Do we love the throaty roar as they zoom down the street, or the feeling we get when there’s nothing but us, our bike, and the endless road?

We think it’s all of the above and more.

So why are Motorcycles often overlooked when it comes to detailing? Motorcycles require the same level of care and attention to detail that cars do. Whether it’s a deep clean, regular maintenance or a polish, Motorcycles benefit greatly from professional detailing.

Reasons to Detail Your Motorcycle

Keep It Looking Good

We all like to look good. Detailing your motorcycle keeps it looking gorgeous, without the unsightly swirls or spiderwebbing that can occur with a poor cleaning job. You’ll turn heads with a clean, shiny motorcycle that shimmers in the sun.

Keep It Working Well

Detailing your motorcycle can help to keep it working well, by preventing oil and grease build up in the engine, or damage to the tyres from brake dust and other dirt and debris that can build up over time and cause untold damage. Detailing is the perfect way to keep your motorcycle in pristine condition.

You Want to Sell It

If you’re looking to sell your bike, having it professionally detailed can actually increase the selling price. As the saying goes, people eat with their eyes, and while we’re confident no potential buying is going to take a chomp out of your bike, the adage remains true – what people see affects them. A clean, professionally detailed bike can sell for more than a dirty bike that hasn’t been taken care of.

Can I Do It Myself?

While, naturally, the answer is “of course you can wash your motorbike on your own”, the question becomes “should you detail it on your own?”. Professional detailing is a lengthy process, requiring a wide variety of products, and a lot of patience. Every situation is unique, and it can be difficult to know what the right products are for you to use.

While our recommendation is always a professional detail, if you’d like to work on your bike and detail it yourself, we’ve compiled a few helpful tips to help you.

Pre-Wash Your Motorcycle

Giving your motorcycle a quick pre-wash can help to dislodge dirt and debris before you start giving it a deep clean. If you aren’t careful, you can end up spreading around debris that can cause damage to your motorcycle.

Don’t Wash Your Motorcycle in Direct Sunlight

Washing your motorcycle in direct sunlight not only makes it a harder (and hotter!) job for you, but it can also affect the finish. Water and soap dry a lot quicker in direct sunlight, so the chances of getting watermarks or not being able to properly wash off all the product you use are much, much higher. This not only makes for a murky finish after you’ve just spent ages cleaning it, but it can also cause damage to the paint.

Use Multiple Different Towels and Cloths

Using the same cloth you’re going to dry the motorcycle with to scrub off that little spot of dirt you missed sounds innocent enough, but in reality, what you’ll end up doing is scrubbing that dirt right back into your paint job and potentially ending up with some pretty ugly results, like swirls, spider-webbing or just plain scratches.

Don’t Use Products Directly On Your Motorcycle

While it might be tempting to squeeze out that wax or polish directly onto the car, you should always put it on your cloth or applicator first. This can help to prevent a streaky finish.

Down, Up, Down

While it’s a common statement to ‘wash your car (or motorcycle) from top to bottom’ you should actually consider washing your tyres first, since they’re usually the dirtiest. This can stop you from splashing dirty water and debris around when you’re cleaning the rest of your motorcycle.

Don’t Use Dish Soap!

Even though it seems like dish soap would work, since it’s so good at cleaning your dirty dishes, dish soap was not made to preserve the finish of your motorcycle. Dish soap can remove the sealers or waxes that are applied to your paint to keep it looking beautiful.

Be Careful of Your Dashes and Controls!

Depending on what kind of motorcycle you have, getting your dashes and controls wet and soapy might not be the best thing for them.

If you’re not sure about whether or not detailing your motorcycle on your own is the way to go, we’ve put together a few reasons why having your motorcycle professionally detailed by a skilled team, just like the one here at Clean Getaway, is the best choice.

Why You Should Have Your Motorcycle Professionally Detailed

Prevent Damage

Using the wrong materials and products can actually cause damage to your beloved motorcycle. Not only will you not get the ideal clean if you use the wrong products, but some chemicals can actually corrode your paint or cause scratches and unsightly swirls.

Save Yourself Time

An in-depth detail can take many hours, and entrusting it to a professional can save you time and energy. You can drop off your motorcycle before work and pick it up at the end of the day without having had to raise a sweat. You’ll have the confidence of knowing that your motorcycle has been treated with the utmost care and only the right products have been used.

Keep your motorcycle in a consistent state of cleanliness and repair by ensuring the same people and products work on your precious bike. Don’t risk getting inexperienced hands using the wrong products on your motorcycle by paying the neighbour’s kid to wash it. Protect your asset with professionals.

No Worries

Leaving your motorcycle to a professional eliminates any need for concern about whether or not you’re going to cause any damage with your wash or detail.

Increase Selling Price

If your motorcycle is consistently professionally detailed throughout the time you have it, when and if you want to sell, you’ll have a better chance at having a pristine bike to sell, upping your selling price from a motorcycle that has suffered neglect and isn’t in the same condition as yours.

Your motorcycle isn’t something to be left neglected – it’s something to be cherished and maintained. Here at Clean Getaway, we understand the importance of your motorcycle and what it means to you.
